America > Canada, Mexico > Lhasa // Lhasa![]() LhasaLhasa de Sela, named after the capital of Tibet, was born into a family of free spirits – for seven years she travelled around the Americas with her parents in a bus transformed into a school of life. Inspired by this perpetual motion, Lhasa would make up melodies which she would hum with her nose pressed up against the window, watching the highway unfold. Her sensibility is rooted at the crossroads between the Mexico of her father, a writer, and the North America of her mother, a photographer. She inherited from them a gift for words and images (she writes her own lyrics and designs her own album artwork). She developed her limpid vocal talent by singing in the little cafes around San Francisco from the age of 13, her repertoire consisting of Mexican rancheras and Billie Holiday songs. Her inspiration perhaps came from listening to the masters - Chavela Vargas, Tom Waits, Cuco Sanchez, Maria Callas, Victor Jara and Jacques Brel - but her style crystallized when she met the Canadian multi-instrumentalist Yves Desrosiers, who co-wrote the songs on her debut album La Llorona. Her old acolyte Jean Leloup is also responsible for the arrangements and the artistic production of the album which went on to sell almost 500,000 copies. The pressures of success become so great that the young artist decides to take a break from her career as a singer. Having completed her tours, she joins her sisters in Bourgogne and returns to the nomadic life of their childhood, devising circus performances. Back on the stage, Lhasa sings and charms her audiences. After the shows, Lhasa helps the troupe take down the big top before they take to the road. One year later, the adventure ends and she settles in Marseille for three years, writing songs. In autumn 2002 she goes into the studio with the French musicians Vincent Segal and Cyril Attef, but the conditions of a Paris studio do not work for her. The rush to record fast to avoid high fees feels wrong and she halts the recording. She returns to Montreal to finish The Living Road at her own pace. François Lalonde and Jean Massicotte, who had been involved in the production of La LLorona, bring inventive and delicate touches to her songs, written in Spanish, French and English.
